Comverge, Landis + Gyr Announce Maingate S4e Release

Automatic Meter Reading Association International Symposium, Long Beach, CA, September 19, 2005: Comverge Inc. and Landis+Gyr Inc. announced today that the companies' jointly developed Maingate® S4e endpoint, a combination of Comverge's under-glass AMR Gateway and Landis+Gyr's S4e meter platform, is scheduled for commercial release in the fourth quarter of 2005. The first collaborative under-glass endpoint design is intended to replace an existing commercial or industrial meter. A retrofit kit for Landis+Gyr S4 and S4e meter platforms will also be released, allowing utilities to follow a simple procedure that enables immediate communications from the endpoint to the utility's head-end system software.

The Maingate S4e endpoint is over-the-air upgradeable, features three communications modes for a wide variety of communications and software configurations, and is designed to operate seamlessly within CDMA networks. The endpoint also allows customers to view usage data in real-time via a web interface powered by Comverge's PowerCAMPTM software suite and can report real-time power outage notifications and power quality alarms to the utility. The Maingate S4e endpoint provides innovation to reduce ongoing maintenance and operations costs through the innovative use of the optical port and LCD interface for programming – a first for the digital cellular AMR industry.

"We feel the Maingate platform is a robust, technically integrated cellular AMR solution currently available," said Arthur Vos, Comverge VP of Marketing, Products, and Strategy. "The work completed by the Comverge/Landis+Gyr team has yielded an excellent product – passing through extremely rigorous ANSI and internal product testing by both Comverge and Landis+Gyr to meet requirements of the industry."

This Maingate S4e endpoint's fully integrated design offers an unprecedented array of functionalities and capabilities to any utility seeking to implement a C&I AMR solution. In conjunction with the external box style Maingate C&I gateway, the Maingate S4e endpoint enables utilities to deploy a robust AMR solution specifically tailored to the needs of their service territory.

Features and Benefits of the Comverge S4e endpoints include:

  • Last-gasp outage reporting
  • Multiple modes of network operation provide scalability and data efficiency
  • Over-the-air network operating mode and programming upgrades
  • Extensive endpoint and over-air diagnostic displays in all modes
  • Advanced S4e C&I platform (Demand, TOU, LP, PQ)
  • All polyphase (socket-, K- and A-base) forms and many residential forms available
  • Only provider of 480A K-base metering solution

"This new endpoint is the most tightly integrated Comverge/Landis+Gyr offering that we have brought to the market to date," elaborated Steve Schamber, Landis+Gyr Product Marketing Manager, C&I Metering. He continued, "It leverages reciprocal communication and operational procedures between the Comverge gateway and the S4e meter. These highly interactive procedures not only facilitate an easier endpoint install, but also form the foundation for a faster recovery path. We couldn't be more pleased with the results of our teamwork."

The S4e meter platform itself offers the following functional enhancements over previous S4 family meters—flash memory for firmware upgrades, an ANSI C12.19 standard protocol, transformer loss compensation option and on-board load profile option. S4e meters also meet the highest industry standards for accuracy—achieving 0.2% accuracy on socket and A-base meters and 0.5% accuracy for Kbase meters. These high levels of accuracy, along with the wide range of meter configurations available, enable a utility to custom build its S4e network, tailored to the exact specifications of its various applications from small C&I demand to substation metering.
